COVID-19 Vaccination Update

 Local Vaccine Overview

The Allegan County Health Department, ACHD, and The Ottawa Coundy Health Department, OCDPH, are working with the Vaccinate West Michigan collaborative on the timing and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine. Local vaccine distribution is based on the phased approach recommended by federal and state health agencies.

Phase 1A – Healthcare workers, first-responders, residents/staff in long-term care facilities
Phase 1B – Adults 65+ years old and essential workers
Phase 1C – Populations at high risk due to pre-existing health conditions
Phase 2 – General population

Currently, both ACDPH and OCDPH are in the process of wrapping up Phase 1A vaccinations and beginning to transition to Phase 1B. Adults 65+ years and older who live in Allegan or Ottawa Counties can now sign up to be notified of vaccination opportunities:
Essential Workers

Employers who believe their employees should qualify as essential workers are asked to notify their local health department by filling out an Employer Vaccine Intake Form
  • This form is to be filled out by employers (not individuals)
  • Businesses with multiple locations should fill out a separate form for each facility/campus in West Michigan
  • Information will be sent to the appropriate county health department
Important Note: Submitting an Employer Vaccine Intake Form does NOT guarantee employees will qualify for the essential worker phase of vaccination. The form simply notifies the health department of an organization’s desire to be considered when it comes time for essential worker vaccination. Each local health department will make the final determination as to who qualifies when the time comes.

Timing of Essential Worker Vaccination

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, MDHHS, recently released a new vaccination timeline in their most recent update to their Vaccination Prioritization Guidance. According to their timeline, most essential workers (other than those who work in schools and correctional facilities) are not expected to receive their first round of vaccine until May. This is due almost entirely to the limited amounts of vaccine currently available in the State of Michigan and, subsequently, to our local health departments.
