Zeeland Interchange BL I-196 improvements were catalyzed through efforts led by Lakeshore Advantage

Project Completion Date Annouced

Work has transitioned to the final stage of construction.  The eastbound traffic was switched over this morning to the new eastbound alignment.
Crews are currently working on traffic signals at Homestead and Main and anticipate having those signals operational and intersections open later today.
Westbound traffic will remain in the existing configuration while the remaining work is completed. Work is anticipated to be completed the week of 11/26 with the signal at 84th Street operational at that time.

Funding this Needed Project in Our Community

In 2017, Lakeshore Advantage worked side by side with Senator Arlan Meekhof’s office to secure a $2 million state appropriation for an improvement project. This grant was just the tip of what we would need -  around $7.6 million - to make the needed upgrades. Lakeshore Advantage worked tirelessly with MDOT, local government leaders and over 20 private sector corporations to successfully secure the match in funding needed to bring this project to fruition.

These improvements are needed to allow for local employers to expand, to increase safety, decrease congestion, and accommodate Ottawa County's rapid growth over the last eight years. Read the press release that announces additional state funding that secured this project and is leading to over $100,000 in business investment by Zeeland Farm Services, Herman Miller and Gentex.

9-28-2018: Update on Project Resuming from MDOT

Lakeshore Advantage received an update today from MDOT on the Zeeland Gateway Improvement Project.
“We heard from the contractor today and it is their plan to resume work on Monday, assuming the weather is cooperative.“
We will continue to keep you updated on any major closures or detours with the continuing construction.  Have a great weekend!

9-27-2018: Short Term Agreement Has Been Reached

We just received word that a short term agreement has been reached to end the road construction work stoppage. This is good news. We will share more as we learn more about the progress of the Zeeland Interchange Project.

9-19-2018: Interchange Work Impacted by Work Stoppage

From Jennifer Owens: President of Lakeshore Advantage

I am writing to let you know that work on the Zeeland Gateway Interchange project has unfortunately been impacted by the work stoppage of the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association after multiple failed attempts to bargain a new contract with the Operating Engineers Local 324.  A prior, five-year contract deal expired in June.  This stoppage began on Sept. 4.  You can find recent article on this dispute HERE that is impacting more than 150 road construction projects throughout the state.
The Governor’s office is working to end this dispute.  We also have expressed our concern to MEDC and local legislative leaders about the negative impact of this stoppage on several road projects in our community.  As soon as I receive additional information on this situation and/or construction progress, I will pass it along.

8-28-2018: Major Intersection Closed for Three Weeks

On Wednesday 8/29 the intersection of Main Ave, M-121 and I-196 BL will be shut down for reconstruction for approximately 3 weeks.
Traffic will detoured via 88th Ave/Fairview, Washington Ave, M-121 and North 84thAve; posted detours will be in place. Please keep in mind there will still be no left turns allowed on I-196 BL.

Expansion underway at Zeeland Farm Services, possible because the Zeeland Interchange Improvements will accommodate better traffic flow.

Improvements being made to ease congestion, increase safety and accommodate business expansions and residents in Michigan's fastest growing county.

7-20-2018: Zeeland Gateway Interchange Construction Update

On Monday, July 23rd,  the I-196 westbound off ramp to I-196 BL (Exit 55), will be shut down for a period of approximately 21 days for reconstruction work. Traffic will be detoured west to Adams St exit and back to I-196 eastbound. A new signal will be active at the I-196 westbound off ramp at Adams St at that time.
Also starting on Monday,  the northbound 84th to westbound I-196 BL movement will not be allowed while temporary widening is being constructed in the median. Traffic will be directed down Homestead Dr to Main Ave to get on westbound I-196 BL.  Traffic will still be allowed to head south on 84th from I-196 BL and head east out of 84th.

In addition, the traffic signal installed at 16th Street and Adams will be permanent.

7-17-2018: Zeeland Gateway Interchange Construction Update

Work continues on the temporary signal at I-196 BL & 84th as well as the new signal at Adams St & the I-196 westbound off ramp. Signal work is planned to be completed by July 20th.
Starting Monday, July 16th , work will begin on the temporary crossovers and widening along I-196 BL. A lane closure will be in place for this work on westbound from the intersection of Main St. & I-196 BL west towards 88th/Fairview. Nightly lane closures on eastbound I-196 BL will be from 7pm – 6am.

7-02-2018: Zeeland Gateway Interchange Construction Update

Construction on the 1-196 gateway project is set to begin this month. M-DOT has provided this information below:

  • New signals will be installed at the westbound I-196 off-ramp to Adams St. during the week of July 9.

  • Beginning the week of July 16, lane closures will begin on I-196BL to build the crossovers and temporary pavement for traffic to use on the south side of the road while the contractor builds the north half of I-196BL. The crossovers and temporary pavement will take about 7-11 days to put in place.

5-16-2018: Interchange Modification: I-196 WB Off-Ramp to I-196BL

This modification of the original plan will allow for I-196 WB off ramp terminal to have a limited right turn free flow. This will help address significant concerns about the planned modifications to this off-ramp which would require all traffic to come to a complete stop.

MDOT planned to have the I-196 WB off ramp traffic coming to a stop at I-196BL (Byron Road), without the existing free flow right-turn onto I-196BL WB.  This is a common traffic control technique for freeway ramp terminals, in urban and rural settings. As noted, MDOT has some concern over the higher speed I-196BL (Bryon Road) traffic from the ramp, including the higher truck volumes, as indicated previously; therefore, it is necessary to balance these concerns with the potential turning movement complications identified by the commercial vehicle operators in the area.  To address as many traffic issues as possible with this project, MDOT has identified a modification at the I-196 WB off-ramp terminal that will allow a limited right-turn free-flow type operation, while still recognizing the need for vehicles, destined for 84th Avenue NB, to reduce their speeds accordingly (see concept).
The overall traffic pattern on this segment of I-196BL will be changing significantly with this project, to address issues raised by local officials and industries.  Traffic operations along the corridor will need to be monitored to ensure all through and turning traffic and signals are operating as expected.
